On November 14th, 2007 we met and discussed:
A Northern Light by Jennifer Donnelly!
Highlights: We ate chocolate cake for Maggie’s birthday. There was extra because Maggie’s allergic. . . We talked a little about A Northern Light. Most members found the vocabulary too challenging to enjoy. Also, the time shifts between chapters made it hard to understand the plot early in the book (until readers got used to it). Contenders for favorite characters included: Mattie, Weaver, Weaver’s Mom, Mattie’s dad, and others.

Click here for a video of Jennifer Donnelly speaking at SUNY Cortland last Spring. I attended her talk at the conference and it was very interesting. She spoke about her inspirations for writing A Northern Light, so you should check it out. - Andy
If you were interested in the murder of Grace Brown and would like to read more about it, I highly suggest Murder in the Adirondacks: "An American Tragedy" Revisited. By Craig Brandon. It is a really interesting book. It is completely factual, whearas An American Tragedy by Theodore Drieser is a fictionalized work based upon the murder of Grace Brown. -Maggie
